Record Of The Day – Una Cita Con Emma

Artist: Pellon
Title: Searching Voices LP – ‘Una Cita Con Emma’

Label: Parallel Label

At this point, the moniker Pellon is unlikely to ring familiar with most. Pellon is the newest project of Sergio Pellon, one half of Monkey Brothers. The producers recent releases and Parallel label imprint have been steadily attracting attention and look set to win further plaudits with his latest release, Searching Voices.

Dabbling between strains of minimal, techno and ambience it’s no surprise the Spaniard describes the principles behind Parallel as “a platform for the development of new art forms and quality entertainment linked with electronic music”. Staying true to that mantra, this is a body of work that experiments and will divide your emotions to great effect.

Across its eight track duration the sounds and ideas create an atmospheric palette that’s spacious and thought provoking and succeeds in leaving you in as warm and fulfilled as it does cold and anxious. The opening cut Una Cita Con Emma starts things off suitably with five minutes of bewildering ambience with a hypnotic vocal sample that will leave you in a comfortable trance.

Following suit, ‘Parar de comparar’, ‘El canto del grillo’ and ‘El cafe thailandes’ offer delicate percussion and instrumentation that create a hazy, mellow and serene soundscape that’s so easy on the ears you’ll be left asking for more.

Not strictly set on relaxing the listener however, ‘Old Man’ is one of the album’s standout moments, with a careful build up and choice of vocal that’s repeated echo of ‘watching’ see’s the urgency and tempo increase expertly. The moodier undertones are followed by the warmer synths on ‘La naturaleza del aire’, a minimal groover and one of the LP’s finest offerings.

Whilst ‘Razones’ rounds off the album in uneasy style, with an explicit sample that repeats itself in uneasy fashion, the penultimate track is a battery of haunting choir vocals and synths that ensures the LP offers an immersive experience that experiments to confident effect.

Describe the record in five words

Mysterious, sensual, atmospheric, urban and exotic

What is it about the record that will appeal to fans?

I hope they can close their eyes and dive into a personal journey, unique and filled with pleasure…

How does it differ from your last release?

My last release was an EP. The sound was deep and melodic. Sometimes groovy, others hypnotic. For me, the mood is very different.

What was the inspiration for this release?

The inspiration was my trips, the searching and finding of new sounds and voices. Something I feel being in contact with other people in different cultures and environments.

If you had the chance to play this in any club, which would it be?

I hope I will have the chance to play in many great clubs so hard to pick just one ;-)
