Record Of The Day…Kyle Watson ‘Road Trips EP’

We sit down with South African taste maker Kyle Watson to discuss his latest EP on This Ain’t Bristol. We find out more about the inspiration behind this EP and the experimentation behind it….

Describe the record in five words.

Kinda fun and weirdly groovy

What is it about the record that will appeal to the fans?

I’d like to think this record is different enough to be interesting while staying true to my sound. There’s some pretty wacky production ideas in there, particularly on the a-side which I think people find interesting and unexpected.

How does it differ from your last release?

I think this EP demonstrates how I’ve been experimenting lately with new techniques and ideas.

What was the inspiration for this release?

Honestly I started out wanting to make a 3-track EP with a grittier darker sound. The first track I wrote was UH which stayed true to that original idea, but when I finished up Road Trips after that I felt the EP could showcase some fresh ideas that weren’t too formulaic.

If you had the chance to play this in any club, which would it be?

I think these tracks need small, dark, sweaty rooms with low ceilings. Chinese Laundry in Sydney jumps to mind!
