Record Of The Day…DJ Sedatophobia – Nova Marris

Artist: DJ Sedatophobia
Title: Nova Marris
Label: Compulsive Movement Records

Release: Out Now

‘Nova Maris’ is the debut album from DJ Sedatophobia, translating as the Latin ‘Fear of Silence’, a tech house product of the Netherlands, currently residing in Lebanon. This 12-track album was recorded over a 7-month period starting in January 2016 with a Mike Monday course, which guides artists to progress and find the inspiration required to finish their projects.

In this album, he bases his melodies on the passion for music of several genres – the drive, the focus, the energy – all combined to unleash creativity and navigate the momentary, fiery, impetuous fervor into the enduring elements of calm and deep. The result is bereft of despondency, embraced with substance, and is both powerful and provocative.

Released on his ‘Compulsive Movement Records’ Label, this album proves his work with Mike Monday on the state of flow to be just that, a journey of an album where the tracks flow into one another with grace. From the intro track ‘Into the Waves’ with its bouncy rolling baseline and Balearic tones, the vibe is carried throughout with powerful chords and diverse melodies. The album feels like one huge journey track split into 12 parts evoking different feelings from the listener.

- Describe the record in five words.

Evolving, Energetic, Melodious, Driving and Nautical.

- What is it about the record that will appeal to the fans?

I tried to create the album in such a way, as I also would like to build up my DJ sets. This means building up slowly and increasing intensity throughout the set/album.  This is only in reference to the buildup of the album. The tracks could be played at home (not exactly for easy listening though), but also enjoyed through club systems. Bodily reactions varying from nodding your head to full body movements, justify the term: Compulsive Movements.

- How does it differ from your last release?

First of all, it is my debut album, which is the first difference comparing to my previous (single) releases. It also is the first release on my newly started record label. The tracks for this release were selected to give you a feeling of a journey throughout playing of the album. The tracks have an overlap and as such, make listening to the album a journey. The buildup is meant to grow in intensity and energy-level, like a good club night is supposed to evolve. The only difference is that the total playtime is much shorter than a decent club night, hahahaha.

- What was the inspiration for this release?

The inspiration for this release originated during a Mike Monday course I did a few months ago. This course was about guiding artists to focus on delivering a bundle of tracks and reaching a state of flow in the studio. This resulted in a total of 31 complete tracks, from which I had to make a selection for an album. There were thus enough tracks to work with. The biggest inspiration I have found in the vicinity of the ocean and the vastness of the sea. The debut album was on my mind for a long time and I thought of discovering new seas as a metaphor. That is also how I came up with the title and the cover art. It is a new sea, a new journey and a new phase in my life and artistic development.

- If you had the chance to play this in any club, which would it be?

I would like to make a distinguishment between festivals and clubs, since I would like to play this release at major European Festivals (e.g. Exit) as well as in clubs such as Club Air in Amsterdam. I felt like including festivals, since I feel the release has tracks that can do well in the setting of a festival.
