In depth with…Terrace

Hi Terrace, how are you? For anyone who doesn’t know would you like to introduce yourself…

Hello, fine thanks, you? This is Terrace. Terrace is more of an idea I had than anything else. It’s a blend, an idealistic crossover of genres. It’s dance music, but hopefully not your typical dance music. To wander in between the genres has always been the goal and not restrict the sound to one type of music. Think of it like taking Morrissey to a rave.

So you’re from Vancouver, what was the music scene like over there? Were you always interested in music?

The music scene here is a tough nut. It has some shining stars, but mainly we don’t exactly fit in and that is ok with us, seeing as we never set out to fit in to one city. It’s more about a setting than a city. I’ve always been a music lover, all the way back to spending my first allowance on a Culture Club records, Colour By Numbers. Eventually becoming an Acid House DJ and settling down into House music in the mid 1990’s lasting to 2003. A lengthy hiatus and ta-dah! I’m going to start making music. I never thought I’d make music, but a little over 6 years ago I got into music production and taught myself some instruments and haven’t looked back.

What made you make the transition from music fan to a musician?

I got inspired by the sounds of a handful of dance crossover artists in late 2010, and thought to myself “it would be fun to have a go at this”. After a year or so of fiddling I got down to recording some of it with the intent of releasing it. The rest just more or less progressed after this point.

So your latest release is forthcoming on your own record label, how long have you been running the label? What sort of things do you have in store for the label or is it just more of a way to release your own music?

TechnoFunk has been around since 2011, I don’t really run it like a label. It’s more or less a vessel for me and my associates to release music on. There’s no grand aspirations to make it a big indie label, it’s just a filing cabinet where we keep our proudest releases.

If you could collaborate with any artist on a musical project who would it be and why?

The what if’s of this one is too big. We could talk all day on this one. For stylings and admiration alone, Chad Valley, James Murphy, The Juan Maclean (which remixed our single Picture Perfect), Theophilus London, Toro Y Moi, the list goes on… However, I am most excited about collaborating with the present line up. We just got started and we have so much more we want to do. The level to which we aspire comes from the three of us in one room making it happen. So as great as it would be to collaborate with a big name, we are feeling just fine where we are.

Tell us more bout your studio, what is your set up like, Do you have any signature hardware or plugins you use regularly?

The studio is just being set up. It’s a large soundproof room in my house. My main go to’s are quite simple. I use a Prophet 08 for most synth sounds. A Roland TB3 for my beloved acid sounds. Maschine works just fine to help lay the beat down and various midi controllers connected to Ableton pave the way. Also, an arsenal of guitars and amps and percussive instruments round out the sound.

Whats been the most memorable gig you’ve played so far?

I think the best show(s) would be the last two. They were the first two with the new formation and they went great. We are finally coming into our own on stage. When you start to feel the songs and become them it makes the live show feel authentic and organic. The shows were in Vancouver (Fox Cabaret) and Toronto (The Rivoli).

If you were able to play anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

We would really like to go and play in Europe. Our biggest fan base is there and we think we could really connect with those audiences. Places like, UK, France, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Portugal to name a few. We would love to play an outdoor show at some point. As in a proper festival side stage (just being realistic here). That would be a highlight.

Besides the music, what do you get up to in your spare time?

We all work in the Airline Industry. In a couple different capacities.

Lastly, tell us a bit more about what you have lined up for the year ahead?

Get this record out. Play some shows. Write some more songs. Get another record out. Some more shows. Ski. Been a pleasure chatting, thank you for some great questions.
